This first type of aluminum coins of the German Empire were issued from 1916 to 1918 as wartime emergency money due to metal shortages. The obverse features the small imperial eagle, rather than the large imperial eagle used since 1890, to allow distinguishing from same coloured 5 Pfennig coins (Jaeger 297).
